Chrayah & Leonard Triumph at Strasbourg International |
|
Derbyshire Badminton players Edd Chrayah and Tom Leonard returned victorious when, for a second time, they joined up with the Glos-Stars Badminton Club from Gloucestershire to play in the CEBA Strasbourg International Tournament. Chrayah and Leonard took the Mens Doubles B title having been runners-up in 2010 whilst Chrayah just failed to defend the singles crown he won in 2010 when he fell at the final hurdle, beaten by fellow Glos-Stars player Horace Chien. Following a
qualifying box round on Saturday, play commenced
on Sunday with the mixed quarter finals which saw Leonard, partnered by
Emily
Witham from Cheltenham, win
through to his second successive mixed semi-final. Sadly for Leonard he
again
fell at the semi-final stage in the mixed event. Next on court was
the singles semi-final which saw Chrayah
battle past Benjamin Miltner of Germany in 3 sets before Chrayah and
Leonard earned
a second successive final appearance with a straight sets win over
local number
2 seeds Gregory Heck and Nathan Laemmel. For the second
year running the singles final was the
highlight of the weekend for Glos-Stars as the club were guaranteed the
champion. On this
occasion Horace Chien was too
strong, comfortably defeating Chrayah 21-11, 21-12.
Chrayah was disappointed to lose his title but had
the perfect
repost in partnering Leonard to a 21-14, 21-13
win over local pair Romain Schalber and Tri dzung
Cao in the doubles
final. Victory was sweet for the Derbyshire pair as Schalber, then
partnered by
Alexandre Fuchs, had won the final against them in 2010. Reflecting on the tournament, Glos-Stars Chairman Ian Day commented “I was delighted that Edd and Tom added the doubles title to their 2010 runners-up placing. They have been great additions to the club’s touring squad and I look forward to seeing them at future events”. Derbyshire Badminton - Premier B Here We Come |
| The
Play Off weekend went very well for us as a team/county. The
preparation was perfect – thanks to David Lloyd Derby who have let our
team players use their facilities in the run up to the event. We all travelled down in convoy (the team plus supporters) to arrive in plenty of time on Saturday morning, ready to face our first opponents – Norfolk. The National Badminton Centre can be a daunting venue for newcomers - but fortunately we have a few players in our side who have trained there more times than they care to remember!! This had to be to our advantage. And we made sure our players who had not played there before were relaxed and comfortable in the arena. Norfolk were likely to be our toughest challenge of the weekend on paper and we knew we had to make the most of having Donna (she could only play on the Saturday). We knew the singles would be tough all weekend for our side who are predominantly doubles players but that if we could take one or two of the singles games then we would be in a good position to win the match. Jon Bishop lost his singles in 3 sets after taking the first game – his first game back after injury proved too hard on the legs and lungs but he played well. I took my singles in two sets – it was hard work – the hall was extremely hot all weekend making for some challenging conditions – breathing was hampered and the heart rates of the players was no doubt raised by the heat! Sarah Pulley was edged out in 3 sets Vs Julie Pike – Norfolks Star Player Lia Kellogg was also beaten in her first game of the day At 3-1 down we had to pull together and believe that we still had enough ability to win. But its always difficult to convince your players of that when looking at a 3-1 deficit! I had some doubts myself J I played with Darrell Roebuck in the mens and we managed to win 21-18, 24-22 – a real battle that could have gone either way. James Boxall and Jon Bishop won their doubles quite comfortably to tie the match at 3-3. Donna Kellogg and Lia Kellogg looked good together as they out classed their opponents, and this was followed by Sarah Pulley and Rachel Roebuck who also took the points for Derbyshire (5-3 up). Going into the mixed we were on top but wanted to make sure we won as easily as possible as the scoring system for the play off weekend means that every point is vital. (Every rubber counts and you are positioned on rubbers won at the end of the weekend, not matches won – so 11-0 is the target) Bishop/D.Kellogg took a shock defeat in three close sets to make the match 5-4 and at this stage I was set down with Rach Gilchrist. The 5-3 lead was looking a little shaky! Fortunately James Boxall & Rach Roebuck won their match and this was boosted when Rach G & I managed to take the 2nd and 3rd set to win the match 7-4!! A Great team effort – thoroughly tiring – a real shock to the system for all of our players (and Norfolks) – the standard was high and the heat in the hall was an added new obstacle! There was a 30 minute break in play before the start of the second match Vs Stafforshire (who had gone down 6-5 to Wiltshire in match 1). Our team was boosted for this match with the arrival of Lee Clapham. Our line up was very similar – as we went into the match against the team boasting the strongest ladies team line up on paper, behind our own. Jon Bishop had a tough singles and also aggravated his previous injury as he went down to the Staffs No1. I managed to win my singles fairly comfortably – helped by the fact that my opponent was struggling with the heat – he was clearly struggling with headache from dehydration. Sarah Pulley had another tough job against Staffs top lady – losing out in 2 sets. But Lia Kellogg managed to change her singles luck as she impressed to win Derbyshire’s 2nd point – 2-2 going into the doubles K.Roebuck/D.Roebuck took the 1st doubles in two sets and this matched in double fast time by Boxall and Clapham who destroyed their opposition. 4-2 Up Kellogg/Kellogg again won their ladies – a tough contest this time in the 2nd set but they held it together – drawing on Donnas experience. R. Roebuck/Pulley fought to win their match in 3 sets after losing the first set and trailing the second. 6-2 Up Clapham/D.Kellogg, K.Roebuck/S.Pulley, J.Boxall/R.Roebuck all won their mixed matches to finish off the Saturday matches with a 7-4 and a 9-2 victory. This left us top of the group going into the Sunday (needing only 4 wins to finish as champions) and took the pressure off us over night. Time for a team meal and a semi celebratory drink – nothing too much as we still had a job to do on Sunday – we owed it to Norfolk who were still battling for the 2nd promotion place. Sunday – Derbyshire Vs Wiltshire – No Donna and a stiff/sore team of players – but we knew all the other teams would be hurting too and that if we could just stay tough for a few more games then the title was ours. The line up was: J. Bishop K.Roebuck S.Pulley L.Kellogg K.Roebuck/J.Boxall L.Clapham/J.Bishop (R. Harris subbed in for Bishop) K.Roebuck/S.Pulley J.Boxall/R.Roebuck L.Clapham/R.Gilchrist Bishop – still struggling with injury from Saturday, went on to brave a fierce singles match against his strongest opponent of the weekend. He lost in two sets and was forced to pull out of the level doubles as his injury and become more serious. Robin Harris was substituted into his doubles slot. I took my singles in 2 sets – I was glad to see the last of my singles over – id forgotten how hard playing these weekends could be – and my singles is less than pretty!! Pulley had difficult match against a quality opponent with excellent movement. Even Sarah’s technical class couldn’t score her a win against the Wiltshire No1. L. Kellogg continued her good form to win in two sets and take us into the level doubles at 2-2. Roebuck/Boxall won in two sets Clapham & Late Sub Robin Harris took a set to get used to each other but turned a one set deficit around to win and put Derbys 4-2 up. R.Roebuck/L.Kellogg outclassed their opponents under the experienced guidance of Rachel Roebuck – the best weekends badminton ive seen from her in a long long time (you could tell she used to play for Yorkshire – the tough mental approach was evident). R.Gilchrist/S.Pulley had to dig deep to win in three sets – narrowly losing the 1st set they increased their consistency to win in 3. 6-2 Up – Victory assured and Promotion secured!! But we didn’t let up – winning all three mixed in 2 sets. A 9-2 finish capped off a great weekend and a fabulous season again for Derbyshire badminton. It has been an exciting but exhausting year. With so many players to look after it is a real challenge and as our performances improve and we win more matches/title/leagues it becomes harder not easier – expectation rises and its tough to keep meeting it. But so far so good. The guys have all been excellent and so have the people who help out behind the scenes. Team manager Graham Watson, the DBA committee + DBA president Mike Bickmore. Its been a real team effort. Next season will be hard again with 2 of our teams jumping up a league and our 3rds looking for promotion again. Id be more than happy if our 1st and 2nd team can retain their places in divisions Prem B & 1A respectively and the 3rds earned promotion – but that’s a few months off and we can think about targets later – we need a couple of weeks break now. Training starts mid June – and no doubt we will see a charge from some of our top U17 players pushing for team places. Its going to be an exciting 2011/12 campaign. We need to say a massive thank you to our sponsors Victor UK who have provided our teams with Kit and shuttles this year. Also to David Lloyd Derby who have helped with use of facilities and to Derby Evening Telegraph for reporting on progress all year. Thanks Kristian back row - Lee Clapham, James Boxall, John Bishop, Kristian Roebuck Front row - Sarah Pulley, Rachel Roebuck, Lia Kellogg, Rachael Gilchrist |
Derbyshire Under 21's are moving in the right direction |
| For
the third year in succession Derbyshire's U21's have continued to
improve their overall position in an annual weekend tournament held in
Hatfield, against twenty one other counties. Two years ago, Derbyshire entered the tournament for the first time, finishing in 17th position. Last year they finished in joint 13th place with Gloucestershire and last weekend moved up to finish in joint 11th position with Hampshire. It was a thrilling weekend with Derbyshire beating Cornwall and Essex, drawing with Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire and losing just one match to Lancshire. Staffordshire who didn't enter a team last year, returned to take the title, with Yorkshire finishing as runners-up. Derbyshire's captain, Kristian Roebuck is delighted with the progress of the U21's and is confident the team will continue to improve next year. Terrific performances were given by Nick Tranter, Ed Oldfield and Rachael Marshal, who sadly will not be eligible to play next year, but the team will still have an excellent core of players; Ed Chrayah, Tom Leonard, Matt Rowbottom, Rachel Hickie, Dannielle Hainsworth and Nikki Hainsworth, with some younger players moving into the U19's also hoping to be selected. This years squad agreed that their player of the tournament should go to Rachel Hickie who did not drop a game in all of her singles matches. ![]() back row - Matthew Rowbottom, Tom Leonard, Nick Tranter, Ed Chrayah, Ed Oldfield front row - Nikki Hainsworth, Rachel Hickie, Sharon Hickie, Rachael Marshall, Danni Hainsworth |
Derbyshire Acheive 12th at the U17 ICT |
| A
young Derbyshire Badminton team achieved 12th place out of 40 at this
year’s Badminton England Inter Counties Badminton tournament. The tournament, for elite junior badminton players, was held in Nottingham for four days, with 40 counties competing for top honours. This year the Derbyshire team outperformed other counties to finish in 12th position, an achievement made the more special as the team were one of the youngest in the tournament with the youngest player being just 13 years old. Badminton England coach James Boxall has been running weekly training sessions for these players which was instrumental in the team’s success. This is yet further evidence of the continued improvement of Derbyshire Badminton juniors across all age groups. ![]() Pictured is (Back l-r) Alex Smith, Toby Fletcher, Ben Wheatley, Matthew Olney and Daniel Hong. Derbyshire 2nd Vs Leicestershire 3rd Match Report |
| Derbyshire
2nd team played away at Leicestershire 3rd - winning 13-2. This Crowns
them CHAMPIONS of Division 3B (with a match to spare) and earns them
promotion to Division 2 next season. A fantastic result to cap a
fantastic season for the 2nd team. They are the first Derbyshire team
to secure promotion this season. Well Done Guys. A brief report from captain Robin Harris: Game 7 and chance to secure promotion! A win and Division 2 next season was guaranteed! Preparation wasn't exactly ideal with two of our star ladies (Charlie and Ali) having been involved in nearly 9 hours of none stop badminton the previous day at the Worcester Open, whilst the men had two new doubles pairs and three new faces brought into the team. We all settled in for a long afternoon, when it became apparent only two courts were available and a home team who didn't turn up until fifteen minutes past the scheduled start time! THANKS! Men Singles 1 Ed Chrayah - battled through his singles. Slightly off the pace to begin with but stepped it up to win in three. A close battle and he did well to win, playing some good stuff. Showed good fitness!! Mens Singles 2 Nick Tranter - started slowly, won a close and tight first game. Worked his opponent out and was comfortable in the second. Dragged into a pace battle and when he started to play angles and variations looked a lot stronger. Massive improvement throughout the season from Nick. 2 - 0 - great start! Ladies Singles 1 Ali Gatenby - very comfortable. Over very quickly! Ladies Singles 2 Charlie Bond - destroyed the Leicester player. Not even a competition! 4 - 0 looking good. At this point it became obvious that the result wasn't in doubt. The men were quite even but our Women were clearly stronger than the opposition!!! Mens Doubles – the team decided to go for experience up front with youth and enthusiasm as second pair. It was a calculated risk playing the young lads together but at the same time, it would be a great learning experience for them! Mens 1 v 1 Si Shaw/Matt Hawksworth - looked comfortable, won well and played consistently. Good start for a new pair. Mens 2 v 2 Nick/Ed - won due to speed and fitness. A good learning curve for them – some frantic hard hitting at time, but enough quality and speed around the court to win. With a bit more experience they are going to start pushing for a place in the starting line up at every match!! 6 - 0!! Ladies 1 v 1 Ali/Charlie – A comfortable win 21-8 and 9. Lades 2 v 2 Rach Hickie/Janine Hickie - played well. Too much for the opposition ladies. Our girls played well!! PROMOTION!! 8 - 0!! All sorted, bring on next season! Mens 1 v 2 Si/Matt – A blip in concentration following the realisation that promotion was secured, led to a below par performance from the guys - Losing in two - didn't get going. Mens 2 v 1 Nick/Ed - the “young guns” obviously wanted to prove a point, good to see! Played to win! Deserved to take two!! 9 - 1 Ladies 1 v 2 Ali/Charlie - scores of 10 and 2!! More convincing than the first game!! Ladies 2 v 2 Rach/Janine - easy first game, relaxed a bit in the second and it was close. Did enough though and never in doubt. 11 - 1....... Mixed 3 v 3 Charlie/Paul Todd – It took Toddy a few points to get into the match, never an easy thing to do when you've sat off waiting for a few hours. Tactically spot on and won comfortably! Good performance. Mixed 1 v 1 Ali/Nick – Need more time to gel. Too much defensive play from the Derbyshire side made the games more difficult than they should have been despite the obvious gulf in ability. A moment of realisation in the 3rd set helped Tranter/Gatenby get it right in the end – “winning ugly” is a skill in its self. Mixed 2 v 2 Janine/Si – A difficult game for the Derbyshire pair – losing out to the Leics team. 13 - 2 3 points and promotion secured. Great team effort and all in all a sign of how good the second team squad is. When ever people have been asked to play they have turned up and performed well!! Lots of competition for next season and I'm sure there will be lots of people trying to force their way into the team!!!! |

Derbyshire 2nd Vs Notts 3rd Match report |
| Match
Report: Sunday 03rd April, Derby II hosted Notts III for the final league match for the County Teams this season. With promotion already achieved, it was time to party and enjoy the moment with the arrival of local rivals Notts being the perfect inspiration to go out on a high and remain unbeaten for the whole season! Ooh not forgetting the slight matter of Ali Gatenby trying to stretch her 100% percent record for the entire season..... Singles: Off to a great start! Ed Chrayah put away Notts II team player Manik Chakravarti in a comfortable two setter. Nick Tranter won well and Derby were 2 - 0 up. Not to be out done, Alison "I don't lose" Gatenby won in convincing and quick time, whilst Notts got a point on the board with Charlotte Bond unable to take the Second Ladies and continue her form from last weekends away match to Leicester. Derbyshire 3 - 1 up. Doubles: The Doubles followed the same pattern as has been in place the entire season i.e. the men battled and scrapped for every point whilst the ladies breezed past the opposition! Shaw/O'Hare who, after losing the first game to the Notts top pair of Cockayne/Chakravarti, stepped up to the plate and took the match in three. At two for the Men this week were Chrayah and Leonard. The game was tight and the "Eddie Fan Club" had enough vocal support left to bring the boys home in two, 19 in both games. On the adjoining courts, the ladies were serenely destroying the Notts pairings and won both games comfortably. Derbyshire 7 - 1 up. Fittingly, the winning points came from the ladies who wrapped up their games without hesitation! Another clean sweep for the Derbyshire women. The women have been the bedrock of the team all season. Out of 8 matches (40 games), I think the ladies have lost only 5 points!! If half your team is performing to this sort of level, success will never be far away!! Mrs Gatenby was still unbeaten! 9 - 1 and the win secured!! 8 out of 8 for the season! Leonard/Chrayah lulled the opposition into a false sense of security and although they were losing at the time, managed to force the Notts pair into submission with a Walk Over. Shaw/O'Hare went down to the Notts second pair. 10 - 2 going into the Mixed and bonus point secured - 23 out of 24 points for the season! A top performance! Tranter/R Hickie cruised through the third mixed in quick time, whilst Bond/Shaw won a close encounter in 3 for the Second mixed. Top pairing of Gatenby/Leonard meanwhile were experiencing a few problems!! Having lost the first 25 - 23, the pressure was really on with a slight matter of a 100% record at stake..... After battling their way through and winners of the second and third ends meant that Ali had achieved a clean sweep for the season! An ever present member of the team, playing in all three disciplines at every match I really can't overstate the achievement!! A fantastic achievement and one that will be very difficult to beat next season! Game Over - Notts sent packing on the wrong end of a 13-2 result! Great day for Derbyshire badminton! I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has played for the Seconds this year. My job has been made very easy by both outstanding performances and also commitment to play when selected! Next year will be a fresh challenge and one to look forward to. Hopefully the Firsts will secure promotion in May and it would be great if the Second team can continue to chase them up the leagues!! As always, thanks to all the Committee, Selectors, Referees and Spectators for your ongoing support and assistance throughout the season, I speak on behalf of all the players in thanking you for giving up so much of your personal time to enable us to play and enjoy the County matches!! Thanks Robin (2nd team captain) |
